Indigenous Culture, Identity and GenderAbstract
The migration process of the Roraima Indigenous woman to the city of Boa Vista has caused changes in cultural practices. This shift has led to a distancing of culture, customs, beliefs and values acquired within the family, by passing experiences that break with the personal and social relationships, causing them to build new identities. The discussion outlined here is given in order for us to understand what are the reasons why indigenous women move to the capital, and why their cultural practices are modified with the contact with the non-indigenous. Moreover, we note that it has not been easy for indigenous women assume their identity before non- indigenous folks on account of bias, use of language, belief or cultural practices. In this sense, to achieve our goals, the methodology adopted was the oral history, trying to show through the accounts of these women that ethnic-cultural relations are still very unequal in Roraima and Brazil, motivated by the lack of preparation on how to learn to deal with differences regarding the specific cultural practices.
