Abstract

The insertion of sex education in the Brazilian school curriculum and the development of sex education practices began in the beginning of the 20th century. Sex education seeks to clarify issues related to sexuality, without prejudice or taboos. The aim of this research was to analyze the perceptions of science teachers in the final years of Elementary School in the state school system of Boa Vista / RR in relation to Sexual Education in science education. The research is characterized as a case study, descriptive and qualitative, with twenty-four science teachers from the final years of elementary school in state schools selected in each urban area of the city of Boa Vista / RR. Data analysis took place through content analysis by Bardin (2011). The results show that although they believe in the interdisciplinary approach to the theme, teachers still adopt teaching methodologies and use didactic resources that promote only the biological aspects of sex education, leaving aside the sociocultural, psychological, affective and ethical dimensions of human sexuality. The most used methodologies when working with sex education are expository classes, seminars, discussion groups, conversation circles, research papers, interactive dynamics and problem solving. It is concluded that the investment in training, adequate didactic material and in interdisciplinary projects that include healthcare professionals and the family are necessary for the ideal development of sex education in science teaching in state schools
