Abstract

Cashew Nut Shell (CNS) is a residual biomass from the cashew nut processing process and the proper use of yhis residue has become increasingly attractive. Thus, this work aims to apply the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology to understand the environmental impacts of these processes, in pilot units withe a processing capacity of 150 kg/h, aiming at energy generation. A gate-to-gate (system boundaries) LCA was applied. In the GWP (Global Warming Potential)  category, it was found thar burnig coal from pyrolysis emits 114 tCO2-eq annually and gasification only 80.4 tCO2-eq. The burning syngas  in the generator, in both processes was responsible for NOX emissions that  sensitizes  the POCP (Photochemical Ozone Formation Potencial) category. In the PM2.5 (2.5 m Particulate Matter) emission category, pyrolysis coal was once again one of the most responsible for the aggravation of the environmental impacts of this category, emitting a total of 21.9kg of PM2.5-eq, while to gasification process only responsible for issuing 0.25% of this total.
