THE “CHINA EFFECT” AND THE GROWING DEMAND FOR COMMODITIES PRODUCED IN THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON

This article seeks to understand the growing demand from China for commodities produced in the Brazilian Legal Amazon, investigating two of the main sectors that received investments from that country and that were highlighted in the export agenda of the Amazon region from 2000 to 2018. The first section of the article briefly discusses the history of China and the country's international insertion. Then, the great Chinese strategy and the global South stand out, focusing on Brazil-China relations. The third part analyzes the “China Effect” in the Brazilian Legal Amazon. Finally, the fourth section presents a survey on the growing Chinese demand for agriculture and mining. As a result, it was found that the increase in imports of commodities by China was one of the major factors stimulating the expansion of its production in the Amazon, contributing to the advance of the agricultural frontier and the strengthening of the sectors of agribusiness and mining in the Brazil. Such expansion has generated significant negative environmental implications, due to the production model adopted. It was also found that this process occurred in parallel with the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries.
