The exaggerated use of fossil fuels to meet the global energy need, has caused serious damage to the environment, since these generate a large amount of polluting gases when burning. Biofuels are presented as one of the most viable alternatives to supply the global energy demand and minimize damage to the environment. In view of this, several policies to encourage the production of biofuels have been created, with the aim of reducing energy dependence on non-renewable sources and reducing environmental impacts. Biomass presents itself as one of the best alternatives for the production of biofuels. In this context, this review aimed to report on the four generations of biofuels, including the type of raw material and the conversion technologies involved in the most commercialized biofuels today, such as bioethanol and biodiesel.
