Plastic waste management in the brazilian uruguayan border

Plastics provide benefits to society; the management of plastic waste (RP) depends on municipal governments and civil society. RPs generates an exponential environmental problem globally due to their slow degradation, type diversification, large volume, and toxicity. The objective of this research was to analyze PR management and the problems associated in the border municipalities of Uruguay and Brazil. Three techniques were used: the documentary analysis, the comparison of the electronic portals of the municipalities and the interview with the managers responsible for the municipalities. There are three ways of exploiting RP: mechanical grinding, chemical treatment and energy recovery. The laws of both countries provide for the interest of protecting the environment against pollution. It is possible to order the level of development of municipal PR management based on: the creation of recycling cooperatives and associations, the implementation of educational activities, the training of collectors and the placement of differentiated waste deposits. Among others, management problems are linked to the lack of commitment from society, non-compliance with current legislation and the cost of transporting recycled materials to distant cities.
