Abstract

Starting from the proposals of the Curriculum Guidelines in Paraná (2008), with regard to the Modern Foreign Language for High School, it is possible to observe that the text is the initial presupposition to explore the four discursive practices (speaking, listening, writing and reading). The literary text assumes an important role in the search for the formation of a subject with creative competence, socially and culturally aware, giving the student a new way of rethinking society and the world. The diversity of textual genres presented to the students allows the perception of structural differences, as well as encompassing human thought, emotion and experience. Among the textual genres, it is suggested to rescue the literary texts by enabling the formation of critical individuals capable of social interaction. The present work aims to report an English Language class for the last year of a course of the Federal Institute of Paraná (IFPR) integrated technician High School, which explored the limericks of Edward Lear, a genre little known in our foreign language classrooms, but with great possibilities of accomplishment of a fun and engaging work, increasing the communicative competence of the students in the process of learning the English language. In addition, it is also intended to raise the awareness of the teachers of English Language, High School, about the importance of working with the literary text.
