O propósito desse trabalho é apresentar orientações teóricas e oficiais sobre a abordagem da variação linguística em sala, como também apresentar indícios que sugerem uma formação profissional mais sistematizada para promoção de práticas de ensino mais condizentes com a proposta nacional e considerando o contexto de Roraima. Para tanto, expõe-se algumas orientações dos Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais (PCN) para o ensino de língua portuguesa, especialmente os que se referem ao trato da variação linguística. Apresenta-se dados de pesquisas realizadas em Roraima que referem-se às práticas de ensino dessa disciplina e, partir dessas discussões, mostra-se a necessidade da oferta de formação adequada ao professor para promover ajustes entre o que se propõe e o que se oferece como ensino de língua portuguesa.
