The aim of this study was to investigate the photosynthetic characteristics in seedlings of Inga edulis subjected to different nitrogen sources (NH 4 and NO 3 ). The study was conducted in a greenhouse at INPA (3o 05'30'' S and 59o 59'36'' W). Plants of I. edulis were inoculated with strains of rhizobio and acclimatized in shade (75%). The experiment consisted of treatments: Control = nutrient solution without added nitrogen, NH 4 = nutrient solution with addition of ammonium (5 mM), and = NO 3 nutrient solution with addition of nitrate (5 mM). After 106 days were determined: specific leaf area (SLA), gas exchange, chloroplastidic pigments (chlorophylls a, b and carotenoids), chlorophyll content index (CCI), total nitrogen and chlorophyll fluorescence. The average value of photosynthesis (A) for the treatment NH 4 was 37 to 30% higher compared with the treatments NO 3 and control, respectively. For chloroplastidic pigments, NH 4 treatment exhibited higher value to the chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids. The other variables showed no differences between treatments. The performance of seedling of I. edulis seems to respond more effectively in the presence of NH 4 . However, difference was observed only for photosynthesis and chlorophyll content. In other parameters such effect is not observed. Therefore, further studies including modifying the dosage of nitrogen sources are necessary to understand what assimilable nitrogen preferable by I. edulis for greater uptake of carbon.
